Legend of Tarzan: Theater Guru Tweets a Thumbs Up Mini-Review
So who is John Shaw? Turns out he’s president of Theatre Management Associates, LLC a motion picture consultant, film buyer, theatre management, film distributor and marketing company. And he pre-screens movies and fearlessly tweets about them, (Damn the Studio Embargo!) … to an audience that is mainly theater owners and distributors — so his tweets have a box office slant to them. Here’s what tweeted about Legend of Tarzan after seeing it at a distributor screening:
Tarzan screenings rate excellent. Very entertaining, good CGI, definitely adult. One of best summer films.

And . . .
Top upcoming films: ID2 strong 6/24, BFG-Tarzan-Purge have wide appeal early 7/1, Secret Life Of Pets skews female 7/8. Cute animated.

And finally — he makes it first choice for its weekend, over BFG and Purge …. not bad. I like this guy.
First choice movies next four weeks: 6/24 ID2, 7/1 Tarzan, 7/8 Mike & Dave, 7/8 Ghostbusters. Outside ID2, preferences will change over time

And he doesn’t love everything — check this out:
Free State Of Jones screenings: glacially slow, disjointed, good stars, predictable, plays like a History Channel presentation. Moderate biz

So has the film been screened for critics? When does the embargo lift?
I think this guy’s a renegade — no lifting of embargo yet. There are lots of advance screenings scheduled next week but there have been distributor screenings earlier than that. And/or they have distributed screeners to distribs. This guy is in that crowd.
Excellent article on LOT movie in WSJ.
